Is Pranic Healing the same as Reiki?

No, Pranic healing is not the same as Reiki.

Pranic Healing and Reiki are two popular energy healing modalities that have gained recognition for promoting well-being. Both approaches share similarities in their fundamental principles, e.g. they utilize life-force called prana in sanskrit, ki in Japanese and chi in Chinese for healing mind and body. But they differ in various aspects.

What is the difference between Pranic Healing and Reiki?

Pranic Healing was developed by Master Choa Kok Sui in the Philippines. Pranic Healing draws from ancient healing traditions and utilizes the concept of "prana," the life force energy present in every living being. Pranic Healing emphasizes the removal of energetic blockages and imbalances to stimulate the body's natural healing processes.

Reiki originated in Japan. It was founded by Mikao Usui. Reiki practitioners believe in the existence of a universal life force energy that can be channeled through their hands. Reiki focuses on activating the body's innate healing abilities by rebalancing and harmonizing the flow of energy.

Reiki can be credited for popularizing energy healing as it started in the 1920s and introduced energy healing to people with little or no experience with energy.

Pranic Healing originated in the 1990s and came to America after a few years since inception. Since then, scores of Reiki Masters have taken Pranic Healing classes. This article is based on books written by Master Choa Kok Sui, author’s own experience of teaching Pranic Healing and an article written by Master Stephen Co, a Master Pranic Healing instructor in California.

Energy manipulation in Pranic Healing is very different from Reiki

  1. Pranic Healing practitioner use a technique known as "scanning" to identify and assess energetic imbalances, to assess areas of energy depletion and congestion, which helps identify problem areas that need healing. Reiki doesn’t use any energy assessment technique but relies on the intuition of the practitioners.

  2. Pranic Healing focuses on cleansing the dirty energy and energizing the aura and the chakras or energy centers located throughout the body. Practitioners use specific hand movements to remove stagnant or dirty energy to clean the energy body and then energize it with fresh vital energy.
Reiki does not have the concept of dirty energy and hence cleansing. Pranic Healing believes cleansing is critical to the healing process because diseased energies and negative emotions have to be first removed before energizing the body to or they may manifest physically in forms such as vomiting or other radical reactions. Sometimes this is called purging or detox and some people believe that they need to feel worse first before feeling better after a healing. By first cleansing, Pranic Healing completely avoids any chance of a negative reaction to a healing making it a very safe healing modality.

  3. Reiki also does not have the concept of chakras or energy-centers. Some Reiki teachers add some basic knowledge about 7 chakras in their classes. In Pranic Healing, 11 major chakras and several minor chakras are studied in detail and are worked on for healings. Reiki practitioners work with the universal life energy by placing their hands on or above the recipient's body. The energy is channeled through the practitioner's palms to promote healing. Reiki practitioners do not manipulate the aura or chakras directly.

  4. Pranic Healing includes a practice called “energetic hygiene” that is rarely found in any healing modality, including Reiki. Energetic hygiene is a set of practices –  cleansing routines – that are designed to keep your personal energy clean. Reiki Masters attending Pranic Healing classes agree that energy hygiene is one of the greatest benefits of the class, particularly the techniques that enable them to cleanse themselves of contaminating energy they pick up from clients and how to prevent subjects or negative people from draining their life force. This is particularly important for not only Reiki practitioners but also to other healthcare providers because these people frequently experience the pain or the ailment of their subjects become drained and tired after healing someone.

  5. Pranic Healing also provides comprehensive knowledge of color prana such as green, violet and gold and how to use them for cleaning and energizing chakras. Reiki does not use color prana. Color prana dramatically accelerates the body’s innate healing abilities. In fact, many Reiki Masters often say that if they have a subject who wants immediate relief or rapid healings they use Pranic Healing – particularly, the colored Pranic Healing techniques. But, if they have a subject who simply wants a relaxing and soothing session, they use Reiki.

Healing Technique Basics: Pranic Healing vs Reiki

Pranic Healing is a no-touch healing modality. A healing is performed without making physical contact. In Reiki, the practitioner touches the body of the recipient lightly.

Approach to healing in Pranic Healing vs. Reiki - Cookbook vs free-flowing approach

Pranic Healing employs a systematic and detail-oriented approach where practitioners follow predefined protocols.

According to Pranic Healing, every ailment produces a unique set of energy patterns that can be identified in the energy body’s 11 major chakras and numerous meridians. In contrast, Reiki is more free-flowing. Reiki has essentially one energy technique – facilitating the flow of Reiki energy into whatever area needs healing – to address all health problems. Pranic Healing, by contrast, uses specific energetic routines of cleansing and energizing that are matched to the specific patterns of energetic deficiencies caused by a particular illness unique to the disease based on the physiology and energetic impact. Pranic Healing, thus, offers a quicker, more targeted and more effective system of healing.

Training and Certification: Pranic Healing is standardized and Reiki has many variations

The study of Pranic Healing involves a comprehensive curriculum structured in 5 levels. Students progress from basic techniques to more advanced practices and learn to heal using color prana and use healing crystals. To become a certified Pranic Healing practitioner, individuals must complete the required coursework, including practical training and examinations. To become an authorized teacher, Pranic Healing practitioner undergo a teacher training program and finish the requirements successfully.

Reiki training consists of several levels or degrees, commonly known as Reiki I, Reiki II, and Reiki Master. Each level builds upon the previous one, allowing practitioners to deepen their understanding and enhance their ability to channel energy. Reiki teachers can modify the training based on what they feel is good and helpful. Reiki certification is attained through training and receiving attunements from a Reiki Master. There are many different types of Reiki e.g. Karuna Reiki, Rainbow Reiki etc.

Pranic Healing is standardized across the globe. Pranic Healing instructors do not modify the training curriculum in any form. Same books and learning materials are used and the certification of completion for a training is valid globally as everyone receives the exact same training and certificate no matter in which country the training is undertaken.

Conclusion: Pranic Healing and Reiki can alleviate the suffering of mankind

While Pranic Healing and Reiki share the goal of harnessing universal life force energy to facilitate healing, they differ in their techniques, philosophies, and training approaches.

In summary, both Pranic Healing and Reiki are excellent healing modalities and help alleviate pain and suffering. However, Pranic Healing gives you the tools to produce faster and more immediate results while “immunizing” you against contamination from the people you are healing.

Pranic Healing complements any and all healing modalities. Whatever your healing technique - Reiki, acupuncture or traditional medicine, Pranic Healing will complement and enhance it.
